Supernatural S13 Review

Well it’s still not the worst season ever done.

Something I meant to note and ended up leaving off is that this season did show marked improvement in the realms of cinematography and fight choreography as well as general atmosphere.  Whatever complaints I might have about the writers, the other staff behind the scenes are doing top notch jobs and the show has been looking great.

      • true… he was weakened after taking on the angels in the warehouse, but he was still an angel, just low on mojo. And, did he not, immediately after Sam dragged Michael and Lucifer to the cage, march in to hell to rescue Sam? The fact remained – he was still an angel.

      • He marched into Hell to try and save Sam AFTER Chuck brought him back from death and re-empowered him.

CASTIEL: That’s a nice compliment. But no. Although, I do believe he brought me back. New and improved.

(I do sometimes wonder if Kripke intended Cas to become an archangel in the end)

Anyway, throughout S5 after rebelling, Cas steadily became mortal. From “The Song Remains the Same”:
CASTIEL: Time travel was difficult even with the powers of heaven at my disposal.
        . . .
        CASTIEL: —it’ll weaken me.

And it turns out I was off. It wasn’t Swan Song where Cas confirmed his mortality, but the episode before, “Two Minutes to Midnight”

        CASTIEL I can’t “zap” anywhere.

        DEAN What do you mean?

CASTIEL You could say my batteries are — are drained.

DEAN What do you mean? You’re out of angel mojo?

CASTIEL I’m saying that I am thirsty and my head aches. I have a bug bite that itches no matter how much I scratch it, and I’m saying that I’m just incredibly…

        DEAN Human. Wow. Sorry.

        Then Pestilence later…

PESTILENCE Well, look at that. An occupied vessel, but powerless. Oh, that’s fascinating. There’s not a speck of angel in you, is there?

        Then with Bobby…

CASTIEL Well, it’s the 11th hour, and I am useless. All I have is this. ( Castiel waves a shotgun What am I even supposed to do with it?

        BOBBY Point it and shoot.

CASTIEL What I used to be —

BOBBY Are you really gonna bitch –to me? Quit pining for the varsity years…And load the damn truck.

I mean, seems pretty clear Cas is mortal at the end of S5 short of Kripke himself walking on screen and saying: “He’s mortal!” lol

    • I mean unless we’re going to get into a discussion about the ontological modes of being, the show has clearly explained (in S5 AND S9) that as an angel loses its power, it becomes more human like – hence why I keep referring to Castiel as mortal (and not necessarily human). Yes philosophically if we were to examine what constitutes the being of an angel without its grace, we would probably find it different from the being of a human – it still remains that empowered angels don’t sleep (or suffer other features of humanity), much less archangels. And as far as every indication shows: Gabriel was fully empowered when he was supposedly kidnapped.

And just goes to show it would have all been better had he’d originally been the other earth’s Gabriel as there wouldn’t be much question that another archangel could catch, restrain, and torture our favorite archangel.

I do wonder what we’re going to see Michael get up to next season. It seems like he would require an army to do to our world what he did to the other one and he is only going to have a dozen angels at his disposal.

  1. And… you skipped Castiel’s reply to Pestilence..

PESTILENCE Well, look at that. An occupied vessel, but powerless. Oh, that’s fascinating. There’s not a speck of angel in you, is there?

(Castiel grabs Sam’s knife and cuts off Pestilence’s ring finger and pinky finger)

    PESTILENCE Oh!

    CASTIEL Maybe just a speck.
